Word Association tips and strategy
- Say each clue with a blank before it and after it: blank flower, flower blank.
- Start with the clue that has the fewest possible partners. It narrows the field fastest.
- Think about open phrases as well as single words, like hot dog or ice cream.
- Watch the letter count. It rules out many near misses.
- The extra clue is cheaper than a revealed letter, so try it first.
- If a guess fits two clues but not the third, it is probably close but not right.
About Word Association
Word Association gives you three clue words and asks for the one hidden word that goes with all of them. Each clue joins the hidden word to make a common compound word or phrase. Flower, glasses and rise all go with SUN: sunflower, sunglasses and sunrise. Sometimes the hidden word comes first and sometimes it comes second, which is part of the challenge.
Psychologists use a similar puzzle, often called remote associates, to study creative thinking, because the answer tends to arrive in a sudden flash rather than through step by step logic. It is also simply a satisfying word game. Every puzzle here is original and built from everyday pairings like cupcake, football and teapot, so the answer always feels fair once you see it.
A round has ten puzzles. A clean solve earns 100 points. Revealing a letter costs 20, showing a fourth clue costs 15 and each wrong guess costs 10, but a solved puzzle always earns at least 10 points. You get three guesses per puzzle. After you solve one, the full phrases appear under each clue. There is also a daily round with an emoji summary to share.
Word Association FAQ
How does Word Association work?
Find the single word that pairs with every clue to form a common word or phrase. The hidden word can come before or after each clue.
Is this the remote associates test?
It uses the same idea of linking three words through a fourth. Our puzzles are original and designed to be fun rather than to measure anything.
How many guesses do I get?
Three per puzzle. Wrong guesses cost 10 points each, and after three the answer is shown.
How are points scored?
A clean solve is worth 100. Revealed letters, the extra clue and wrong guesses lower that, down to a minimum of 10 for any solve.
