How to play Letter Swap

Goal

Rebuild all six words (three across, three down) before you run out of swaps.

  1. 1Tap a letter, then tap another to swap them. You can also drag one tile onto another.
  2. 2Green tiles are in the right place and lock in.
  3. 3Yellow means the letter belongs somewhere else in that row or column. Gray means it does not belong in that word.
  4. 4You have 15 swaps. Every puzzle can be solved in 10, so each spare swap earns a star.

Letter Swap tips and strategy

  • Start with the corners and the center. They belong to two words, so fixing one helps twice.
  • Look for yellow tiles that sit in two yellow words. Their letter is wanted in both, which narrows it down fast.
  • Before you swap, try to make both tiles turn green. A swap that only fixes one tile is usually wasted.
  • Read each row and column with the green letters only and guess the word before you touch anything.
  • Gray tiles are useful too. A gray letter in a row has to move into a column word.
  • If two tiles hold the same letter, swapping them does nothing, so the game will not let you waste a move on it.

About Letter Swap

Letter Swap is a word puzzle played on a five by five grid with four holes, which leaves room for six five letter words: three across and three down. All 21 letters are on the board, but most are in the wrong place. Your job is to swap pairs of letters until every row and column spells a real word.

The colors do most of the teaching. A green tile is correct and locks in place. A yellow tile holds a letter that belongs somewhere else in its row or column, and a gray tile holds a letter that is not needed in that word at all. Tiles where a row and column cross count for both words, so a yellow corner can be pointing at either one. Repeated letters are counted carefully, so if a word needs one E and you already have one in the right spot, a second E will show gray.

Every puzzle is generated from common English words and scrambled so that it can always be solved in ten swaps or fewer. You get fifteen. Each swap you have left at the end earns a star, so five stars means you found the shortest route. There is a shared daily puzzle with an emoji grid to share, plus unlimited free play.

Letter Swap FAQ

Is Letter Swap the same as Waffle?

It uses the same idea of swapping letters on a waffle shaped grid with green and yellow hints. It is our own version with its own puzzles and a free daily game.

How many swaps do I get?

You get 15 swaps. Every puzzle can be solved in 10 or fewer, so up to 5 swaps can be left over as stars.

What does a yellow tile mean?

The letter belongs in that tile's row or column, just in a different spot. Crossing tiles are yellow if the letter is needed in either of their two words.

Can I continue a puzzle later?

Yes. Unfinished puzzles are saved in your browser, and the daily puzzle keeps your progress if you reload the page.
