A to Z tips and strategy
- Do not freeze on a hard letter. Skip it and come back with fresh eyes.
- Think of subgroups. For animals, run through birds, fish, insects and farm animals.
- For countries and cities, picture a map and sweep across it region by region.
- Simple answers count just as much as clever ones. Cat is worth the same as caracal.
- Type fast and do not worry about capitals or plurals. The checker is lenient.
- At the end, read the suggestions for letters you missed. They make the next round easier.
About A to Z
A to Z is the alphabet game you may have played on long car rides. Pick a category, such as animals, countries, foods or jobs, and try to name one thing for every letter from A to Z before the timer runs out. Aardvark, bear, cheetah, dolphin and so on, all the way to zebra.
There are twelve categories to choose from: animals, countries, foods, jobs, sports, cities, plants and flowers, things in a house, musical instruments, body parts, clothing, and fruits and vegetables. Each one has a list of accepted answers, and the game is forgiving about how you type them. Capital letters, spaces, hyphens and simple plurals do not matter, and common alternate spellings are included.
Some letters are hard in almost any category. Q, X and Z can stump anyone, so you can skip any letter for a five second penalty. Skipped letters come back once you reach Z, if you still have time. Easy gives you four minutes, Medium three and Hard two. The daily challenge picks one category for everyone.
A to Z FAQ
What if my answer is right but not accepted?
Our lists are large but not endless. Try a more common name for the same thing, or skip the letter and keep moving.
Do plurals count?
Yes. Typing foxes, babies or wolves is fine, and the game matches them to fox, baby and wolf.
Can I skip a letter?
Yes. Skipping costs five seconds. Once you have been through the alphabet, the game returns to letters you skipped.
How is the score worked out?
Your score is the number of letters you complete, out of 26.
Is there a daily version?
Yes. Each day has one category and a three minute timer, the same for everyone.
