Sea Battle tips and strategy
- While hunting, fire in a checkerboard pattern. Every ship covers at least two squares, so you can skip half the grid.
- After a hit, try the four squares around it. Once you have two hits in a row, keep going along that line.
- When a ship sinks, mark the area as solved and move on rather than firing around it.
- Spread your own ships out and avoid lining them all up along one edge.
- Ships may touch, so a cluster of hits can belong to two different ships. Watch the sunk messages.
- Later in the game, aim at open areas big enough for the largest ship still afloat.
About Sea Battle
Sea Battle is a naval guessing and deduction game in the style of the classic Battleship pencil and paper game. You and the computer each hide a fleet of five ships on a ten by ten grid: a flagship of five squares, a cruiser of four, a frigate and a submarine of three each, and a patrol boat of two. You then take turns calling shots at the other side's waters.
Every shot is a hit or a miss. Hits burst into flames and misses throw up a splash. When every square of a ship has been hit, it sinks and its outline appears. The first player to sink the entire enemy fleet wins. Your accuracy and shot count are tracked as you go, and winning in fewer shots gives you a better score.
The computer plays at three levels. Easy fires mostly at random. Medium follows up on hits and traces a ship along its line. Hard uses probability, skips squares that cannot hold the smallest remaining ship, and closes in fast. The daily Sea Battle gives every player the same hidden enemy fleet, so you can compare shot counts with friends.
Sea Battle FAQ
Is Sea Battle the same as Battleship?
It uses the same classic rules as the pen and paper game: hidden fleets, turns of single shots, and sinking every ship to win.
How many ships are there?
Five: ships of five, four, three, three and two squares, for seventeen squares in total.
Can ships touch each other?
Yes. Ships cannot overlap or hang off the grid, but they can sit side by side.
What is the daily Sea Battle?
Each day everyone faces the same hidden computer fleet. You get one battle, and your score is the number of shots you needed to win.
Does a hit give me another turn?
No. Players always alternate one shot each, whether it hits or misses.
