How to play FreeCell
Goal
Move all 52 cards to the four foundations, ace to king by suit.
- 1Every card starts face up in eight columns. Build down in alternating colors.
- 2Park any single card in one of the four free cells at the top left.
- 3Move several cards at once when you have room: free cells and empty columns let you shift longer runs.
- 4Any card or valid run can go into an empty column.
- 5Safe cards jump to the foundations on their own. Fill all four to win.
On a computer
Drag cards, or click a card and then its destination. Double-click sends a card to the foundation, a column or a free cell. U undoes, H hints, N deals a new game.
On a phone
Drag cards, or tap a card and then tap where it goes. Double-tap sends a card to its best spot.

FreeCell tips and strategy
- Look for the aces and twos first and plan how to dig them out.
- Keep free cells empty for as long as you can. Each filled cell halves the run length you can move.
- An empty column is worth more than a free cell, since it doubles how many cards you can move together.
- Build long alternating runs on top of kings, then use them as a home for loose cards.
- Before you commit to a plan, count the moves it needs. If a step needs one more free cell than you have, look for another route.
- Use undo freely. Since every card is visible, you can test an idea and back out of it.
About FreeCell
FreeCell is a solitaire game where every card is dealt face up from the start. Fifty two cards fill eight columns, and four free cells at the top give you space to park single cards. Your job is to move every card to the foundations, building each suit from ace to king.
Because nothing is hidden, FreeCell is almost entirely a game of skill. The classic computer version numbered its deals from 1 to 32000, and players have shown that nearly all of them can be solved. Only a handful of deals, including the famous game 11982, are known to be impossible.
Our FreeCell uses the same numbered deals, so game 1 here is the same game 1 that people have played for decades. Type any number to replay a favorite, or take the daily deal and race the clock. Supermoves let you shift a whole run at once when you have enough free space, and safe cards fly to the foundations on their own.
FreeCell FAQ
Is every FreeCell game solvable?
Almost. Of the 32,000 classic numbered deals, only a few cannot be solved, the best known being game 11982.
How many cards can I move at once?
One more than your empty free cells, doubled for each empty column. With 3 free cells and 1 empty column you can move 8 cards to another column.
Can I play a specific game number?
Yes. Type a number from 1 to 32000 in the box above the table and press Deal.
Why do some cards move by themselves?
When a card can no longer be needed in the columns, it moves to its foundation automatically. Riskier cards stay put so you decide.
How is FreeCell scored here?
Your score is the time it takes to solve the deal, so faster is better. The daily FreeCell lets everyone race the same deal.
