How to play Higher or Lower

Goal

Make as many correct calls in a row as you can.

  1. 1Look at the face-up card. Aces are high, twos are low.
  2. 2Guess whether the next card from the deck will be higher or lower.
  3. 3Each right call adds one to your streak. A wrong call costs a life.
  4. 4If the next card has the same rank it is a push: no point and no life lost.
  5. 5Play with three lives, or try a single run where one miss ends it.

Higher or Lower tips and strategy

  • Middle cards are risky. After a 7 or 8 your odds are close to even, so think about which cards are already gone.
  • Count the high and low cards that have come out. If most of the high cards are gone, lean toward lower.
  • On the three lives mode, the buttons show the current odds. Use them to learn how often each call wins.
  • A push is not a mistake. Same-rank cards just keep your streak where it is.
  • Near the end of a deck the remaining cards are easier to predict, so stay focused.

About Higher or Lower

Higher or Lower is one of the simplest card games there is. You see one card, then guess whether the next card from the deck will be higher or lower. Get it right and your streak grows. Get it wrong and you lose a life. It is easy to learn in seconds and surprisingly hard to put down.

The game shows up in many forms, from family card tables to television game shows, and it is sometimes called hi lo. It is a nice way to get a feel for probability: after a 2 or a king the choice is easy, but a 7 or an 8 is close to a coin flip, and remembering which cards are gone gives you a real edge.

This version uses a real 52-card deck, so cards that have been played will not come again until the deck is used up. Aces are high. A card of the same rank is a push, which means no point and no lost life. Play with three lives or a single run, and try the daily deck where every player sees the same cards.

Higher or Lower FAQ

Are aces high or low?

Aces are high in this game, above kings. Twos are the lowest cards.

What happens if the next card is the same rank?

It is a push. Your streak does not grow and you do not lose a life, and play carries on with the new card.

Is Higher or Lower just luck?

Mostly, but not entirely. Each card comes from a real deck, so keeping track of what has been played improves your odds.

What is the daily Higher or Lower?

Everyone gets the same shuffled deck for the day with three lives. You get one run, so make each call count.
