Tips for unscrambling words

  • Look for common endings. If your letters include S, ED, ER or ING, set them aside and unscramble what is left. Then add the ending back.
  • Start long. The longest group is usually the hardest to see on your own and the best scoring in most word games.
  • Use the filters for crosswords. Know the first letter and the length? Set both and the list shrinks to a handful of words.
  • Use blanks to find hooks. Add one ? to your letters to see which extra letters turn your rack into longer words.
  • Practice without help. Try a round of Word Scramble or Anagrams first, then check what you missed here.

Questions

What is a word unscrambler?

A word unscrambler takes a set of letters and lists every real word you can make from them. Ours shows words from 2 to 15 letters, grouped by length, with everyday words listed first.

How do I use a blank tile or wildcard?

Type a question mark (?) or an underscore (_) for each blank. A blank can stand for any letter. In the results, letters that came from a blank are shown in gold.

Which dictionary does the unscrambler use?

It uses the same English word list as our word games: about 54,000 words from the open source SCOWL project. About 10,000 of them are marked as common words, and those are listed first.

Does each letter have to be used?

No. Each letter can be used once per word, but a word does not need all of them. The longest group at the top shows the words that use every letter, if there are any.

Is the word unscrambler free?

Yes. It is free with no sign up and no download. It runs in your browser, so after the word list loads, results appear instantly as you type.

Can I use it for Scrabble-style tile games?

Yes, it works as a helper for any letter tile game or crossword. Every game has its own official word list, so a few words may differ from ours.
