How to play Unblock

Goal

Slide the big red block down and out through the exit at the bottom.

  1. 1Blocks slide up, down, left or right into empty space. They never rotate.
  2. 2Each slide of one block in one direction counts as one move.
  3. 3Make room so the big 2 by 2 block can reach the exit in the middle of the bottom edge.
  4. 4Every level shows the fewest moves possible. Use Hint if you get stuck.

Unblock tips and strategy

  • The two empty squares are your real pieces. Think about where you need them next.
  • Moving one block several squares in a straight line counts as a single move.
  • Wide blocks are hardest to get past the big block, so plan their route early.
  • Pairs of small squares can do the job of a tall or wide block and are easier to steer.
  • If you are going in circles, Hint shows the next move of a shortest solution.
  • Restart once you know the route to try for a perfect three star score.

About Unblock

Unblock is a wooden sliding block puzzle in the style of Klotski. The tray is four squares wide and five tall, packed with blocks of four shapes: small squares, tall blocks, wide blocks and one big two by two block. Only a sliver of empty space is left. Your goal is to slide the big red block down to the exit in the middle of the bottom edge.

Unlike a parking puzzle, every block here can move in any direction, up, down, left or right, as long as there is room. That freedom makes the puzzles feel different: you often need to walk a block around the tray, opening space behind you as you go. Sliding block puzzles of this kind have been sold as wooden toys for about a century, and some famous layouts take more than eighty moves.

Every one of our 48 levels was generated by computer and solved with a search that found its shortest solution, so you always know the target. Levels are grouped by that length, the hard group runs past a hundred moves, and your best result for each level is saved.

What is a Klotski puzzle?

Klotski is a traditional sliding block puzzle where blocks of different sizes move in any direction and you must get the largest block to an exit. Unblock follows the same idea with original levels.

How is Unblock different from Traffic Jam?

In Traffic Jam each car moves only along its lane. In Unblock any block can slide up, down, left or right.

Are all levels solvable?

Yes. Each level was verified by a solver, and the best possible move count is shown above the board.

Does the game remember my progress?

Yes. Your best moves for every level and any unfinished level are saved in your browser.
