About Minesweeper

Minesweeper is a logic game played on a grid of hidden squares. Some squares hide mines. When you reveal a safe square, it shows a number telling you how many mines touch it, including diagonals. You use those numbers to work out where the mines are and clear every safe square.

The game became famous when it shipped with desktop computers in the early 1990s, and it has been a favorite quick puzzle ever since. Our free version keeps the classic rules with an Easy nine by nine board and a Medium sixteen by sixteen board, a timer and a saved best time for each level.

Your first click is always safe, so every game starts fairly. Minesweeper is great training for careful, step by step reasoning, and it plays well on desktop with a mouse or on a phone with tap and long press.

Minesweeper tips and strategy

  • A 1 touching exactly one hidden square means that square is a mine. Flag it right away.
  • When a number already has as many flags around it as its value, every other hidden neighbor is safe to open.
  • Learn the 1 2 1 pattern along a wall: the squares next to the two 1s are mines and the square next to the 2 is safe.
  • Work from the edges of the open area inward, since that is where the numbers give the most information.
  • Use flags. They make the numbers easier to read and stop accidental clicks.
  • If you truly must guess, guess in a corner or an area far from known numbers, where the odds are usually better.
  • On a phone, long press a square to flag it, or turn on Flag mode so every tap places a flag.

Minesweeper FAQ

How do you win Minesweeper without guessing?

Read each number against its hidden neighbors and flag squares that must be mines. Most boards can be solved mostly by logic, though some positions do force a guess.

Is the first click in Minesweeper safe?

Yes. In our version the mines are placed after your first click, so it is always safe and usually opens an area.

What do the numbers mean in Minesweeper?

Each number shows how many mines touch that square, counting the eight squares around it including diagonals.

How do I flag a mine on my phone?

Long press the square, or turn on Flag mode above the board so taps place flags instead of revealing.
